Our Environment

Our environment is very important to us. Green issues are high on the consumer conscience and all our customers are placing greater emphasis on environmental issues. Today, school children are educated in the importance of reducing, re-using and recycling and it is up to all of to ensure we leave the planet in good shape for the next generation.

Noble Foods have commissioned a range of different projects aimed at meeting our ‘green targets’. These are;

Recycling

We have launched a new internal campaign to recycle waste across all of our sites. This is a great initiative which has been well received by all colleagues throughout the business.

In 2011, as a group, Noble Foods has recycled over 70% of its General Waste, and is committed to recycling 80% of our general waste in 2012. This forms part of our landfill avoidance strategy and we now recycle eight times more than we have done previously.

Renewable Energy

Noble Foods supply environmentally friendly eggs which reflects the importance we place upon caring for the Environment. We have built production systems aimed at generating and using renewable energy such as, small wind turbines and solar panels which have been installed at a number of our farms.

Walesby Free Range Farm is one of our latest conversions; each shed has a small wind turbine and two solar panels. This produces enough energy over 24 hours to power each shed.

We are working on projects to install large wind turbines, of up to 2 Mega Watt (MW) capacity, at our larger sites in Scotland and England within the next 24 months. We are actively discussing partnering in a project to install an Anaerobic Digester at one of our farms utilising on site manure, this will represent a significant generation of renewable energy within the company.

LED Lighting

Lighting represents a large proportion of Noble’s energy consumption; one hen shed alone can use over a hundred lights. In an effort to cut our usage we have begun to introduce LED lamps to replace standard light bulbs. The LED lamp only requires 10% of the energy used for a standard lamp.

We currently have over 4000 LED lamps in use in agriculture. This trial has been a great success with no detrimental effects to either bird welfare or production.

LPG Lorry Conversions

Our milling division is leading the company and feed sector in low emission vehicle conversions by investing in new fuel technology. Fifteen feed delivery vehicles from our Belle Eau Park Mill have already been converted to run on LPG, this reduces their carbon footprint significantly by using less Diesel and improves fuel consumption by 12%. This initiative is being rolled out across the business during 2011.
